In an attempt to raise as much money as possible for a truly worthy cause, I'm going to attempt the Camino to Santiago. It was historically a religious pilgrimage, but of recent, it’s become more spiritual. The entire walk takes around one month which starts in St Jean (France) and ending in Santiago de Compostela (West Spain) however, with working full time, I’m going to attempt to walk the last 503km, starting in Burgos, in just 12 days. I’ve set aside 2 weeks from the 17th – 29th May to complete the walk. With not much preparation and no real eating or sleeping arrangements, I’m hoping to gain interest around it and raise as much money for A Gift to Lift as possible. I’ll set off on my own but no doubt meet an array of weird and wonderful people who are all taking on the walk for their own personal reasons. My Plea to you: Please follow me on my adventure, in what I can only describe as the most ridiculous idea of my life, but absolutely all for a good cause. Any donation, big or small, will help towards the cause. Whether you are able to donate or not, I would really appreciate if you could all share this page and ensure as many people have the opportunity to help out in granting Alex her last wish of buying a house in Norfolk where patients and families can spend some quality time together; a feeling I’m sure we can all relate to in one way or another. On average, pilgrims walk around 17-28km a day, however I’m aiming to complete the walk in 12 days so have to do at least 42km a day to reach my target. Sounds crazy, it probably is, but I’m really passionate about raising money for not only a great cause, but for a friend, who captured the heart of every person around her, and then the nation, when her story was told! Alex Hopwood, this ones for you!
A Gift To Lift was set up by Alex Hopwood in 2014. Alex set up the charity whilst going through harsh treatment for Leukaemia. She started by creating Jewellery and headbands that could be sold as gifts to help provide other patients with a little lift. Also the money raised from the sales of these handmade products went towards giving wishes to blood cancer patients.
Alex received chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and two bone marrow transplants, but Alex unfortunately lost her battle on December 15th 2014. Alex assigned close friends and family to carry out the roles of trustees of the charity, and so today A Gift To Lift continues to raise money to support blood cancer patients, donate towards blood cancer research, and to work towards Alex's dream of buying a holiday home in Norfolk for blood cancer patients to spend quality time with their loved ones.
We welcome and appreciate all of your support no matter how big or small.
