We are a group of volunteers currently supporting a group of 170 refugees (including 50 children) in our local area who have been housed in temporary accommodation. So far, we have been supporting them with second-hand items, our own funds, and some donations but there are still many more people who need our help. Many items need to be purchased new including underwear, socks, nappies, and hygiene items.  Other items like phones and shoes are hard to get donated, so we need funds to purchase.  We will also support funding travel to lawyers or doctor appointments.

This group of refugees has been provided with food and accommodation, for which they are extremely grateful. However, they still only have the clothes in which they arrived in the UK, making them feel dehumanized and impacting upon their emotional well-being.

Refugees are not illegal immigrants. They are asylum seekers waiting for their claims to be heard. Ordinarily, refugees in the UK are given just £39 per week to live on – but if they are staying in a hotel like most of this group are, they do not get any cash allowance at all. They can’t work, sometimes for as long 12 months, while their asylum claims are being processed. This is where our support is essential and must continue, and so we are fundraising to continue to do what we can.

Any contribution, big or small, would be so appreciated!

Care4Calais is a volunteer-run charity delivering essential aid and support to refugees living in the UK, Northern France, and Belgium. We believe in a fair and tolerant British society and advocate for a welcoming and inclusive attitude towards refugees. Operating year round from Calais, our focus is to provide warm clothing, bedding, food and medical assistance to people in desperate need. We also provide social support and interaction, including language lessons and sports and music workshops. We are on the ground with the refugees every single day and are respectful of their common humanity and responsive to their needs.
