The Bedford Hospitals Charity was founded in 1988 to improve the equipment
and facilities for patients and staff at Bedford Hospitals. It is run
entirely by volunteers thus keeping the cost of running it to an absolute
minimum. The charity has raised well over £9½ million since it was founded,
notably £2½ million to establish the Primrose Cancer Unit. Recently it has
raised £200,000 for the maternity unit, £600,000 for a CT scanner with a gamma camera and £750,000 to develop and improve cancer services throughout
the hospital. It has recently agreed to fund £1 million for a new MRI scanner. It also runs and funds the Primrose Car Service which takes radiotherapy patients for treatment at Addenbrooke's Hospital entirely free of charge. The latest appeal is to raise £½ million for four new items of diagnostic equipment and also to bring back Hospital Radio to the wards.
